  • As the digital economy continues to grow, companies and individuals are not taking cybersecurity seriously enough, according to Erik Brynjolfsson, director at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy.
  • Combating cyber threats “boils down to prioritizing at a higher level,” Brynjolfsson said.
  • Some of the fixes are straightforward: For example, he said, two-factor authentication might prevent unauthorized logins and machine-readable paper ballots could make voting systems more secure.
 although large numbers of routine jobs will be eliminated, large numbers of “empathetic” jobs will be created.

  • Facebook reported Friday that up to 50 million user accounts may have been compromised and taken over by cyberattackers.
  • Companies spend millions on cybersecurity, but still fall prey to cyberattacks.
  • Many of the cybersecurity issues companies are tasked with fixing are backward-facing, but it is also important to give equal focus to forward-looking matters.

  • Earlier this month, Kurian told employees that he was taking an extended leave, though a company spokesperson said he was expected back soon.
  • Kurian joined the company in 1996.
  • Net neutrality advocates worry that without rules, internet providers could create fast lanes and slow lanes that favor their own sites and apps or make it harder for consumers to see content from competitors.
  • Advocates of net neutrality hope the new law will have national implications by pushing Congress to enact national net neutrality rules or encouraging other states to follow suit.
  • But the U.S. Department of Justice wants to stop the law in its tracks, arguing that it creates burdensome, anti-consumer requirements that go against the federal government’s approach of deregulating the Internet.
This is a mentionable and will accelerate Alexa Skill development…think in-app purchases.
  • Darktrace’s most recent valuation of $1.65 billion marks a 32 percent increase in the last four months.
  • Its technology uses AI and machine-learning to detect and counter cyber threats.
  • The funding comes at a time of rapid growth for both the cybersecurity and AI industries.

  • Amazon launched at least 15 new hardware products during a special launch event on Thursday.
  • The event showed how serious Amazon is about owning the smart home space.
The Feds are just here to help on 5G
  • The latest update to Google’s Chrome browser automatically signs users in if they use any other Google services.
  • Although users still have to consent to have their Chrome data sent back to Google, privacy advocates see this as a breach of user trust.
  • Ultimately, this change more explicitly frames Google Chrome as another Google service, rather than as a neutral platform to surf the web.
Apple Siri & SalesForce for Enterprise
  • FedEx’s executive VP Rajesh Subramaniam said Amazon’s new delivery service “should not be confused as competition with FedEx” during the company’s most recent earnings call on Monday.
  • This isn’t the first time FedEx downplayed Amazon’s logistics threat.
  • Amazon continues to expand its own delivery network, and launched a new program called Delivery Service Partners that lets entrepreneurs run their own local delivery networks of up to 40 vans.

Episode 61 – Oracle’s Cloudy outlook. Sky’s Dim.

Oracles numbers seem “OK”….but are they half-baked or fully cooked?

  • Revenues of $9.19bn were up just one per cent from last year’s total of $9.1bn.
  • Net income of $2.27bn was up eight per cent from Q1 FY2019.
  • Earnings per share of $0.71 were up 10 per cent from $0.61 last year.
  • Cloud services and license support, the branch that accounts for 72 per cent of Oracle’s total income, reported $6.6bn in revenues, up three per cent from $6.41bn in the year-ago quarter.
  • Cloud and on-premises licensing revenues, nine per cent of Oracle’s total haul, saw revenues of $867m, a three per cent decline compared to Q1 a year ago.
  • Hardware similarly took a hit, as revenues of $904m were down four per cent from last year.
  • Services revenues of $813m were a decline of five per cent from last year.

  • Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa put down a significant deposit with SpaceX to become the first ever private tourist to fly around the moon on the company’s Big Falcon Rocket (BFR)
  • Maezawa wants to take six to eight artists from around the world on the nearly week-long trip.

  • Amazon plans to release at least 8 new Alexa-powered devices before the end of the year.

  • Microsoft’s cloud platform Azure enables businesses to “process the data at the pace they want” and Adobe’s enterprise solutions allow businesses to “attract customers to the platform and engage it,” he says.
  • Citi Research reiterates its buy rating for Amazon shares, saying a company split up would increase shareholder value.
  • “By separating the retail and AWS businesses, Amazon could minimize or avoid the risk of increased regulatory pressure,” analyst Mark May says.
